Homage.  Westonbirt International Festival of the Garden

 

'Homage' was a paean to traditional orchards and lost apple varieties. Entered via a straw bale apple house and enclosed in a lime-rendered straw bale wall, the garden featured three dead apple trees festooned with the copper name tags of old varieties. Below, on a low mound of wildflowers, a mini-orchard of traditional varieties supplied blossom in the early summer and apples in the autumn.  Fifty volunteers were trained in building with straw bales and a specially commissioned sound track by Justin Nichols gave the space added atmosphere.
